What is a Bernedoodle? What Are They Like?

A Bernedoodle is a cross between a Bernese mountain dog and a poodle. This means Bernedoodles inherit the loyal, friendly traits of the Bernese combined with the intelligence of a poodle, resulting in a very trainable puppy that can also be goofy and fun! While personalities can vary quite a bit, even among siblings, Bernedoodles typically have an abundance of energy and need to have space to run and play.

What is a Mini Bernedoodle?

To put it simply, as the name implies, a Mini Bernedoodle is a smaller version of a Bernedoodle. However, getting to that point requires detailed knowledge of how certain genes are passed down from the parent breeds (Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle). By understanding these genetic pathways, we are able to produce dogs that are smaller in size than standard Bernedoodles. 

What is a Multigen Mini Bernedoodle?

A Multigen Mini Bernedoodle puppy is one that is multiple generations removed from purebred Bernese and Poodle. In other words, the father is either an F1B or F2B Bernedoodle, which results in different genetic traits than directly breeding a Bernese and a Poodle (a standard Bernedoodle).

What makes a Multigens better than a Standard Bernedoodle?

The benefit of breeding multigen Bernedoodles versus traditional Bernese-to-Poodle or F1-to-Poodle is that by carefully screening for specific traits, we are able to select breeding stock that have the Bernese's strengths in color and body type, and the Poodle's hypoallergenic coat and smaller size. Plus, it allows us to have more diversity in coat types while still retaining the nonshedding gene.

Breeding multigen Bernedoodles takes a lot of care and knowledge, but with years of experience and careful genetic testing, we are able to consistently produce beautiful Mini Bernedoodles in the 20-40lb range with superior coats and temperament. Nearly all of our puppies are tri-colored, with the exception of an occasional red puppy, with hypoallergenic coats that have a beautiful, wavy/curly appearance.

Keep in mind that hypoallergenic does not mean they are guaranteed not to shed at all, and any breeder that says otherwise probably isn't well versed in the nuances of genetic testing. That being said, what hypoallergenic does mean is that, even if there is very minimal shedding, your dog's coat will be allergy-friendly.
